About

I am a religious and cultural historian with a passionate interest in the ways in which religion and colonialism have interacted historically to create the modern world. I studied at the University of Sydney and the University of Oxford where I received a DPhil in medieval history in 1984. I then taught at Macquarie University, the University of Sydney, and the University of Newcastle, NSW. From 2005 to 2006, I was Keith Cameron Professor of Australian History at University College Dublin. I am a Life Fellow of Clare Hall, Cambridge. From 2011 to 2012, I will be Visiting Professor at the Centre for Research on Social Inclusion, Macquarie University.

I have a wide interest in the endlessly fascinating ways in which religion and belief have shaped cultural, ethnic and political identities in both the later middle ages and the transnational British and Irish spiritual empires. Within this broad field, I research the history of medieval astrology, lay piety, church state relations, Aboriginal missions including missionary linguistics, and religious aspects of Victorian medievalism.  I enjoy working with collaborators. With Dr David Roberts (University of New England), I have been funded by the Australian Research Council (2010 - 2012) for a project entitled, "Liberty, Anti-transportation, and the Empire of Morality." This concerns the cultural and religious dimensions of the campaign to end convict transportation and other forms of material and spiritual slavery and create a more moral colonial empire. With Glen O'Brien, Marion Maddox, Troy Duncan, and Ian Breward, I am working on the first national history of Methodism in Australia. With Colin Barr (Ave Maria University, Florida) I am planning a conference on the Irish Spiritual Empire to be held in Newcastle in December 2012.

I am a member of the executive of the Australian Historical Association and the President of the Religious History Association.
